 MS. ALINDA DICKINSON WASNER

CLASS OF 1963

A Michigan (Detroit and Lansing) high school English teacher, a library media specialist, an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy and Mott Community College, and a Public Relations Director for Detroit Public Schools, Alinda Dickinson Wasner totaled 37 years with Michigan public schools.

A two-time recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award at

Detroit Henry Ford High School, Wasner is also one of Detroit's foremost poets, her works having appeared in 80 print and online journals/anthologies. Her 4 books include the collections Still Burning (2015) and The Day Sky (2024) and chapbooks Kissing the Icons (2013) and When You Don't Know Who You Are (2016). A forthcoming collection, Heart Houdini, will be published in 2026 by May Apple Press.

A review of When You Don't Know Who You Are notes Wasner

.. .has long been known as one of Detroit's finest poets, and this stunning, stark and deeply felt collection shows us why. Readers can see an experienced poet at work with her craft exploring the very essence of her own being and her own unique past (M. L. Liebler).

Alinda has won numerous literary prizes including the Chicago Poetry Center juried award, a Prague Writer's fellowship in 2007, second place in Ireland's International Poetry Prize in 2012, and most recently, she was an honoree in the Arts category in Detroit's Hannan Center's "Next Chapter 2025 Awards," a celebration of the senior community's extraordinary achievements and enduring potential. Currently, the Detroit Public Library Main Branch is archiving 5,000 of her poems.

Ms. Wasner has volunteered for many years at Michigan Interfaith Action and Interfaith Impact, serving as President of each in the 1990s. Since 1968 she has been active in support of peace and justice organizations, including civil rights and women's health issues, especially the National RCRC (Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice).

Her work may be found online at TheStarvingPoet.com and a video presentation is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNCnE2Dvoc8

MR. CHARLES "CHUCK" NEAL
CLASS OF 1970

Charles "Chuck" Neal, son of Charles and Ruth Neal, is a proud 1970 graduate of Galion High School. During his years at GHS, Chuck distinguished himself in both the classroom and on the athletic field. He was a class officer, Boys' State delegate, member of the National Honor Society, and the first recipient of the William F. Unckrich Scholarship. Athletically, Neal earned eight varsity letters: three in football, two in basketball, and three in baseball.

He was captain of both the football and baseball teams his senior year, earning Honorable Mention All-NOL honors as a defensive back in football and First Team All-NOL honors as a shortstop in baseball. His contributions were recognized with the prestigious GHS Athletic Award Plaque.

After graduation, Chuck pursued higher education, earning a B.S. in Education from The Ohio State University and an M.A. in Education from Bowling Green State University. He has dedicated his life to education and is now celebrating his 52nd year in the profession. His career includes 11 years at Colonel Crawford Schools, 25 years at Galion High School, and 16 years at Plymouth High School, where he has served as a teacher and school counselor.

Chuck also left a lasting legacy as a coach. Over 33 years of varsity football, he guided teams to four NCC championships and three NOL championships, while also coaching basketball, track, and softball.

In recognition of his impact on students and schools, he received the Martha Holding Jennings Award in 1988-1989.

Beyond his professional achievements, Chuck values his family above all. He and his wife, Maureen, have been married for 40 years and have raised three children-Eric, Amy, and Lauren (Neal) McCray, who is married to her husband Chad. Chuck is the proud grandfather of Mackenzie and Nathaniel. He also celebrates the support of his siblings: Linda, Pam Hayes and her husband Dan, and Gary and his wife Brenda.

Chuck reflects with gratitude on the many friends, mentors, colleagues, and - most importantly - the students who have made his journey meaningful. He takes great pride in the accomplishments and successes of the young people he has taught, counseled, and coached.

His advice to students is simple and powerful:

Commit to the Task; Maintain a Positive Attitude; Live with No Regrets
