Class Reunion

October 6, 2007

GHS Class of 1967 Holds 40th Reunion

Sixty-seven members of the Galion High School Class of 1967 and 40 guests gathered at Deb’s Cedar Cabins Banquet Hall on the outskirts of town for their 40th class reunion on Saturday, Oct. 6.  An autumn décor was featured inside and outside the hall, with the sights and sounds of Halloween lurking about.  Classmates were welcomed from 12 states, including Ohio, Connecticut, Michigan, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Oklahoma, New York, Illinois, North Carolina.

Class members enjoyed a social hour beginning at 5:00 p.m., followed by a special appearance of the Galion Alumni Band, performing school songs which sparked the spirit of all attending. An outdoor class photo was then taken by Photorama.

The group was formally welcomed by Marsha McCracken Cheesman, , whose speech praised the committee’s  relentless efforts made to locate classmates, emphasized the importance of being able to “laugh at ourselves instead of each other”, and challenged the class to remember that “the best things in life aren’t things.” A candlelight dinner and dessert buffet was then served.  Larry Treisch offered a prayer of thanks.

Prior to a brief business meeting, Kathy Miller Price dedicated a heartwarming verse in remembrance of the 16 deceased classmates. A special prayer was given in their memory.  After dinner, a Trivia Game, created and conducted by Sue Borg Poll, challenged the classmates’ memories of elementary, junior, and senior high school and growing up in Galion.  Top scores went to the teams of Bill Hurlow and Bill Pancoast.  Other prizes awarded went to Charlie Smith, first reservation received; Dale Dickerson, the 40th reservation; Dave Smith, traveling the farthest; Joanne Burns, the most grandchildren (16); and Bill Marino, the 67th reservation.

Ingemar Svala distributed student directories to those present and continued to update biographical information throughout the evening to encourage future communication among the classmates.  Steve Kump announced his creation of a website solely for use by the Class of 1967.

Dance music was provided by a disc jockey, with songs being dedicated to special years and events.  A “multiplication” dance, initiated by Sue Borg Poll, filled the floor with both eager and reluctant dance partners.

Class members enjoyed an informal gathering Friday night at Varsity Grille.  Tim Groth offered tours of the old and new high school on Sunday.

Committee members included Kathy Miller Price, Marsha McCracken Cheesman, Sue Borg Poll, and Ingemar Svala.  A reunion committee was formed for 2012 and includes Becky Wallace Napier, Charlene Neff Wilkinson, and Steve Kump.
